Genetics - essence

Genetics is a branch of biology concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms. Gregor Mendel, a Moravian Augustinian monk working in the 19th century in Brno, was the first to study genetics scientifically. Mendel studied the "inheritance of traits," the patterns in how traits are passed from parents to offspring over time. He observed that organisms (pea plants) inherit traits through individual "units of inheritance". This term, which is still used today, is a somewhat ambiguous definition of what is called a gene. The inheritance of traits and the mechanisms of molecular inheritance of genes are still basic principles of genetics in the 21st century, but modern genetics has expanded to study the function and behavior of genes. Gene structure and function, variation and distribution are studied in the context of the cell, the organism (eg dominance) and the population context. Genetics has spawned a number of subfields, including molecular genetics, epigenetics, and population genetics. The organisms studied in the broad field span the domains of life (archaea, bacteria, and eukarya).
