Infection is the invasion of body tissues by disease-causing agents, their multiplication, and the response of host tissues to the infectious agents and the toxins they produce. An infectious disease, also known as a transmissible disease or contagious disease, is a disease resulting from an infection.
In ancient times, the Greek historian Thucydides (c. 460-400 BC) was the first person to write in his account of the Plague of Athens that diseases could spread from an infected person to others. In his On the Different Kinds of Fevers (c. 175), the Greco-Roman physician Galen suggested that ulcers are spread by "certain plague seeds" that are present in the air.
