Radiology – imaging diagnostics – essence
Radiography is an imaging technique that uses X-rays, gamma rays, or similar ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation to see the internal shape of an object. Applications of radiography include medical radiography – both “diagnostic” and “therapeutic”. Because the body is made up of different substances with different densities, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation can be used to reveal the internal structure of the body on an image receptor by highlighting these differences through attenuation, or in the case of ionizing radiation, absorption of X-ray photons by denser substances (such as calcium-rich bones). The discipline that involves the study of anatomy using radiographic images is known as radiographic anatomy. The acquisition of medical radiography is usually performed by radiographers, while image analysis is usually performed by radiologists. Some radiographers also specialize in image interpretation. Medical radiography includes a range of modalities producing many different types of images, each with a different clinical application.
