Nikola Vasilev was born in 1949. He graduated in medicine in Sofia. He studied in London, Tokyo, Vienna, Heidelberg, York, Budapest and Warsaw. He is a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, pathology and oncology. In 1998, Associate Professor N. Vassilev founded the General and Oncological Gynecology Clinic at the Military Medical Academy, which he headed until 2014. He also worked at the Department of Pathology of the Sofia Medical Faculty, Hospital "R. Angelova" (Pernik), National Oncology Center, Maichin Dom University Hospital (Sofia), Pirogov Institute, Anaim Hospital (Republic of Guinea), MBAL-Samokov, First Hospital "St. Sofia", Second General Hospital "Sheynovo" and Hospital "Sofiyamed".

From 1999 to 2012, Associate Professor N. Vasilev was a national consultant and created the first "Medical Standard in Obstetrics and Gynecology". From 2006 to 2013, he was the chairman of the Bulgarian Oncogynecology Association. Since 2011, he has been a lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of St. Kliment Ohridski". Associate Professor N. Vasilev was Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister in two governments, Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Health Insurance Fund. He performed expert tasks for the World Health Organization and the European Parliament. He was honored with the "Best Obstetrician-Gynecologist of the Year" and "Golden Hands" awards, with honorary plaques from the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, the Association of Women Soldiers, the Bulgarian Association for Preventive Medicine, the Istanbul Center for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Nikola Vasilev is Commander of the Order of the Legion of Honor (France).
