Dr. Georgi N. Chaldakov was born in 1940 in Burgas. Since 1970, he has been working in the Laboratory of Cell Biology, Department of Anatomy and Histology, Medical University - Varna.
"With embryonic stem cell gene technology, you remove genes from mice and get knockout (KO) mice. Valuable information can thus be gained about the functions of a protein encoded in the disrupted gene. For these discoveries, Mario Capecchi, Martin Evans and Oliver Smithies in 2007 received the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine.
Check out these cuties - they were born at The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) in the US - the world's largest center for breeding knockout mice. JAX has 7,000 different types of knockout mice and sends about three million of them annually to more than 20,000 researchers in 50-60 countries around the world.
