Introduction
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common mononeuropathy in clinical practice. Although the first description of compression of n. medianus (NM) in the carpal tunnel (CC) dates back to 1854, only a century later "carpal tunnel syndrome" appeared as an independent term. Many years passed from the initial observations to the acceptance that compression of the NM in the wrist region was the basis of the pathophysiology of this disease. Previously, patients who had symptoms that we now know are due to SCC were diagnosed with acroparesthesia, compression of the motor branch of the NM, or of the brachial plexus.
