The book "A Practical Guide to Assisted Reproduction", published under the editorship of Dr. Sasho Raykov, obstetrician-gynecologist from the Assisted Reproduction Center of Acibadem City Clinic Tokuda Hospital, aims to familiarize a wider circle of doctors with the specific problems of couples with reproductive problems, so that they be properly and adequately treated before seeking assisted reproduction clinics.
The publication is the result of an author team of proven professionals with many years of practice in medicine
– Dr. Sasho Raykov and Dr. Meftune Shefketova, specialists from the Center for Assisted Reproduction of Tokuda Hospital, Prof. Radka Argirova, MD, virologist from the Clinical Laboratory of the hospital, Todor Chaushev, biologist, and Dimitrinka Tsaneva, embryologist. The author of the review is Dr. Petar Ignatov, MD, obstetrician-gynecologist.
The book aims to develop protocols, which should be short, meet the daily needs of the clinic as much as possible, based on world practice and comply with the Bulgarian legal framework.
In a country with a long and deepening demographic crisis like Bulgaria, the problem of sterility is becoming more and more relevant
With the development of reproductive techniques and the exponential increase in the number of in vitro procedures (by 5-10% per year), the number of clinics and doctors who are engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of infertile couples is increasing.
"The motivation of the entire author team was the fact that our country is one of the leading places in Europe in terms of the number of performed procedures for medically assisted reproduction, but until now there was no published guide on the subject. Its purpose is to benefit both obstetrics and gynecology specialists, as well as couples who are about to visit the office for assisted reproduction," said Dr. Raykov.
Within 182 pages, structured in 4 sections, 45 articles present expertly, yet concisely and informatively
the main guidelines in the methodology of diagnosis and treatment of the infertile couple
through the methods of assisted reproductive techniques (ART).
In the creation of the guide, reputable and proven sources of information were used, such as: documents of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), the American Fertility Society (AFS), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the National Institute for Clinical Excellence of Great Britain (NICE), the Spanish Fertility Association (SEF), as well as scientific literature from sources such as the Cohrane library, Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction, etc.
Regardless of the fact that there is a significant need in Bulgaria for a basic and detailed textbook on reproductive medicine, which is periodically republished according to the new developments in this field, we can only welcome this first-of-its-kind practical guide on assisted reproduction and thank the authors, and in particular to Dr. Sasho Raykov, for its publication," reviews Dr. Georgi Nikolov.
