Infection is the invasion of the body tissues of an organism by disease-causing agents, their multiplication, and the response of host tissues to the infectious agents and the toxins they produce. An infectious disease, also known as a transmissible disease or contagious disease, is a disease resulting from infection.
In ancient times, the Greek historian Thucydides (c. 460–400 BC) was the first person to write, in his account of the Plague of Athens, that diseases could spread from one infected person to another. In his work On the Different Kinds of Fever (c. 175 AD), the Greco-Roman physician Galen suggested that ulcers are spread by "certain plague seeds" that are present in the air.
