PREFACE
Dear students,
I have the honor and the pleasure to present to you this teaching aid issued mainly by the team of the Department of General and Operative Surgery of the Medical University - Sofia, together with distinguished specialists from other universities and specialties.
In recent years, in connection with the ongoing health reform in the Republic of Bulgaria, it was necessary to shorten and redo the curricula for the training of nurses and midwives several times.

In addition, many of the former colleges were closed and the rest became affiliates of the Medical University-Sofia. This created a prerequisite for the publication of this manual for their training.
Nursing and midwifery offer great career opportunities after graduation and also open many doors to the world. This necessitated an increase in the requirements for students' education, so that they could acquire a serious set of knowledge and practical skills. They can be compared and competed with related specialties taught around the world.

Nowadays, surgery is undergoing changes in two directions - first, it is increasingly fragmented, which led to the emergence and development of neurosurgery, vascular, cardiac, thoracic, pediatric, plastic, maxillofacial surgery. Second, the surgeon must increasingly possess competence and knowledge from other disciplines such as anesthesiology and resuscitation, immunology, genetics, gastroenterology, etc.

The author's team believes that with the current rapid development of surgical specialties, it is very difficult to know all the novelties, but our effort was to get as close as possible to this goal. The selected team of prominent specialists in each of the areas under consideration guarantees the seriousness and quality of the developed topics.
