Environmental toxicology
This textbook was developed in accordance with the curriculum of the discipline "Ecological toxicology", included in the bachelor's program of the specialty "Ecology and protection of ecosystems" and the specialty "Pharmaceutical biotechnologies" at the Faculty of Biology of PU "Paisiy Hilendarski", as well as in the bachelor's program of the specialty "Biology" where this subject is optional. The textbook presents a historical background on toxicology and the use of poisons, the characteristics of the main processes and terms in environmental toxicology and transport of toxicants in the environment. Special attention is paid to the classification of different types of toxicants - inorganic and organic, bioindicator species and the most used biomarkers, and examples from the authors' practice in the field of water toxicology. The textbook can be used by all students studying environmental specialties in other universities of the country, as well as by specialists in the field of environmental toxicology.

Environmental Toxicology is a key textbook providing extensive information on the interaction between chemicals and the environment, focusing on toxicological aspects from the perspective of ecosystems and biodiversity. This textbook is designed for students and professionals in ecology, biology, chemistry, and other related sciences who are interested in the effects of chemicals on animals, plants, and the environment.
The beginning of the textbook discusses the basic theory and methods in environmental toxicology, including the principles of toxicology, the different types toxicity, risk assessment methods and strategies for managing toxic substances in the environment.
The following sections of the textbook examine the various sources of environmental pollution and their effects on living organisms and ecosystems. The different classes of chemicals are discussed, including pesticides, industrial chemicals, heavy metals, organic pollutants, and others, as well as their potential effects on human health and the environment.
The textbook also offers a detailed analysis of methods for detecting, evaluating, and monitoring toxic substances in the environment, including biological and chemical tests, computer models, and experimental studies.
In addition, Environmental Toxicology also focuses on technologies and methods to reduce pollution and protect the environment. Different waste treatment methods, risk management strategies and environmental protection policies are discussed here.
In conclusion, this textbook presents current knowledge and scientific achievements in the field of environmental toxicology, while offering important guidelines for applying this knowledge to practical situations. It is an essential source of information for anyone involved in environmental protection and wanting to understand the effects of chemicals on living organisms and ecosystems.
